Bilgola SLSC History

(Work in Progress)

From The Historian - James Chant (Jimmy)

The Bilgola Surf Life Saving Club was formed in the summer of 1949, when a small band of locals commenced patrols on Bilgola Beach.

Below are a couple of old photos which have been taken from the Bilgola Archives.

We are not sure of the actual year, but it is most certainly in the fifties. It depicts the club house and "modern" modes of transport of the time. This photo is courtesy of Ann Spencer.

Bilgola Clubhouse and "Modern Cars" - 1950's (we think)

The next photo is of the boat shed, which was "Pre" the club house.

Irene before we had a clubhouse

“Irene” as she was effectionately know, was Bilgola’s first surf boat. She was stored unceremoniously on a couple of saw horses in the walk way from Allen Avenue. How things have changed! She was known as Irene, because every time you caught a wave, it was "Good Night Irene".
