Education, Training & The Academy
The Bronze Medallion/Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
The course usually consists of 6-8 weeks of training twice a week. The length of time depends on the progression of the participants.
Advanced Resuscitation Certificate (ARC)
SLSA requires every Patrol to have at least 1 ARC holder. The use of Oxygen increases the chance of survival and rates of recovery of those that are injured or require CPR. Please consider undertaking this course, as the more ARC holders we have the less pressure there is on the current holders. This will also enable us to add more Patrols to the roster.
Training is done at Bilgola and the exam is held by Branch at North Curl Curl on the last Tuesday of each month.
Silver Medallion Inflatable Rescue Boat Drivers (IRBD)
Once again we are required to have a minimum of one driver per Patrol, but the more the better. We hope to have squads training within Patrols, so training will be done during Patrols. The Prerequisites for the IRBD include Bronze Medallion and IRB Crewperson Certificate. The IRB resources are currently under review and will be released soon.
Defibrillation
For every minute that an unconscious, non breathing person with no signs of life is not defibrillated their chance of survival decreases by 10%.
The defibrillator that the club has is an SAED (Semi Automated External Defibrillator) although these defibrillators are very easy and safe to use it is still important and a requirement that operators are trained in it’s proper use. The more patrollers that have this qualification the more lives that can be saved.
Through training and education Bilgola SLSC continues to develop and maintain the high level of skills required of our lifesavers.
SLSNSW is an RTO (Registered Training Organisation) and thus a number of its courses are recognised nationally through NSW VETAB.
Even though the Bronze Medallion/Cert II in public safety is the minimum requirement to patrol our beach, you should look at it as though it is only the beginning of your training. There is a great deal of knowledge and skill to be gained and all will enhance your experience as a Surf Lifesaver and will certainly help your Surf Life Saving Club in patrolling the beach.
The extra courses are not compulsory but many require only a small commitment of your time. The benefits to you, the club and to the injured person are great.
